I spent the weekend walking in the Cotswolds with an old friend, who owns our dog Roddy’s mum. Weather was perfect, the vegetation was burgeoning, the views fantastic, my knees held out, and I was slightly maddened by AllTrails’ love of displaying full-screen “Good job, Alex!” messages and promoting giga-tier subscriptions when I’m trying to find the route. Oh, and they changed the Apple Watch app so it no longer shows the map and instead a gnomic compass that sort-of points towards where the path is. So we got lost a lot, but that’s always been how my friend and I spend time together.
We ended up at a great National Trust house, Snowshill Manor, which an architect and illustrator called Charles Wade decided to fill with themed curiosities, curating rooms as stage sets for themed amateur dramatics parties. There is a room filled with bikes, and another with full suits of samurai armour. He also made little houses and laid out a model village. In other words, he was a mega dork who’d be into role-playing games today.
Also, the cafe is particularly good and served us the best damned curried cauliflower pasty I have ever had.
